The last two NLSA series champions found victory lane last weekend with the Minn-Kota / NLSA Lightning Sprints, as Kelsi Pederson bested the field at the Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, ND. One night later, defending series champion Alex Truscinski won for the second consecutive week at the Devils Lake Speedway near Crary, ND.
On Friday night at the Red River Valley Speedway, it was Travis Surerus starting on the pole before his hometown crowd, with Alex Truscinski lining up to his outside.
But it was third starting Kelsi Pederson who wasted no time moving the No. 93 Northland Sheds Henchcraft to the head of the field.
The race was marred by misfortune for many drivers in the field as Alex Trucinski had to head pit side early with mechanical woes, after Kendra Westlund flipped her No. 113 in her series debut. Westlund, who is also an ice oval snowmobile racing standout, should prove to be a great addition to the series.
Jason Berg also had his share of misfortune, as he lost a powerplant in a big way after the checkered flag. The Red River Valley Speedway fire crew was at his side quickly, and Berg emerged un-injured.
Pederson was followed to the checkers by Alan Truscinski, Bryce Haugeberg, Berg, and Dexter Dvergsten. Alan Truscinski and Pederson were the heat winners. 13 cars made the trip to the Red River Valley Speedway.
Saturday night at Devils Lake, Berg returned after dropping a new engine between the rails of his machine, while Westlund was unable to continue her weekend.
Cody Swenson and rookie Kate Taves made up the front row for the third visit of the season to Devils Lake. Sixth starting Alex Truscinski in his Altoz Mowers Henchcraft No. 10, and seventh Kelsi Pederson, made short work of making their way to the front of the pack.
It was Truscinski, however, that took the point and built a half lap lead on the rest of the field to pick up the victory in the caution free 20 lapper.
Pederson was second, with Dvergsten third, Bryce Haugeberg fourth, and Alan Trucinski rounding out the top five.
In victory lane, Truscinski talked about his woes from the previous night, while also admitting it still felt as if he was down on power.
Minn-Kota / NLSA action continues this Friday night for the second time this season at the River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, and for the fourth time the following evening at the Devils Lake Speedway.
